Ceviche is a favorite dish in Peru, but by far the favorite for tourists is Lomo Saltado

Lomo saltado is one of the most sought after of Peruvian dishes by travelers to Peru. And family travelers to Peru are no exception. Kids love the beef and french fries of this traditional Peruvian recipe. We recommend trying this recipe at home and perhaps even turning it into a family travel Peruvian night…play pan flute music, eat lomo saltado, and watch Raiders of the Lost Ark, or some other movie set in Peru.

Here is the recipe we use:

  • 1 lb. beef tri-tip, sliced 1/4″ thick
  • 1 medium onion, sliced
  • 1 bell pepper, sliced
  • 3 tomatoes, seeded and sliced
  • 1/4 cup vinegar
  • 2 TBSP soy sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Season sliced raw meat with salt and pepper to taste. Heat a tablespoon of olive oil in skillet. Add meat and fry for a few minutes. Remove. To same skillet, add onions. Cook until transparent. Add peppers and tomatoes. Cook for a few minutes. Pour in vinegar and soy sauce. Add meat back into skillet. Cook until meat is done. Serve over french fries.

Over our many years of family travel to Peru, we have enjoyed much family-friendly Peruvian cuisine. This recipe comes from our book, “Nate & Shea’s Adventures in Peru“.
